Two women sit in a meeting room, engaged in conversation. The woman in the foreground wears a dark shirt and has her arms folded, looking ahead thoughtfully. The second woman, slightly out of focus in the background, wears a blue and white striped shirt and appears to be speaking. A whiteboard with colourful markers is visible behind them.

Why are so many candidates dropping off my career site?

Why are so many candidates dropping off my career site? What are the main things I can do to fix this problem?

94% of candidates who view a job posting don't finish their application.  There's no quick fix; it's usually down to a buildup of smaller moments that impact the candidate experience and make the application process difficult for them.

Here are three areas where this can happen:

The user journey
The content
The application process

The user journey

If your careers site isn’t optimised for candidates, drop off can occur from the moment talent lands on the site. Tools like heatmaps, on-site analytics, and Application Tracking System (ATS) completion rates will help pinpoint where candidates are losing momentum. Key conversion points have a large impact, so focus on fixing the moments that matter most.

Some of the most common friction points can be simple but costly:

  • There’s no clear route to job listings

  • Search and filtering functions are missing or difficult to use

  • Calls to action (CTA) aren’t visible or strong enough to guide candidates forward

"Map talent journeys by persona to account for varying entry points and intent. While organic searchers often start at the homepage to learn about the brand, social media referrals typically land deep-linked within job descriptions, requiring immediate, role-specific engagement."

The content

Content plays a major role, but we’re talking quality over quantity. Around 78% of candidates want to understand your culture before making an application, but many careers sites rely on generic messaging or stock imagery. When it’s harder for candidates to connect to your employer brand, it creates hesitation.

"One of the biggest misconceptions is that the careers site is just a place to list jobs. Candidates want to understand your values, benefits, and team structures. When companies fail to highlight what makes them unique, employee stories, ERGs, culture, and progression pathways, they miss a key opportunity."

Data shows that the candidate journey is changing, with 44% of respondents stating they have used AI in their job search journey, and candidates are being served structured, direct answers. As a result, if your content doesn't align with external sources, it can cause an inconsistent employer brand message that may push them to look elsewhere.

The application process

Nearly 60% of job seekers abandon applications when the process takes too long. Repetitive forms, unnecessary fields, and clunky user journeys quickly turn intent into frustration. Add slow load times or a lack of mobile optimisation, and you’re losing candidates before they’ve had a chance to apply.

Here are a few things to check:

  • Review the total number of questions with your recruiters, and streamline the process to only ask what you truly need. If you need to ask lots of questions, use a progress bar to keep the finish line in sight.

  • Use ATS stage completion analytics to identify where candidates are dropping off, and optimise those points.

  • Ensure the user interface and tone of voice feel like a seamless extension of your careers site, rather than a disconnected ATS handoff.
