Spring Week Applications

Maven’s employer brand tagline is “Opening Minds and Markets” and as a company they have big ambitions when it comes to driving diversity into a historically white male-dominated industry.

They recognise that to attract and retain the best diverse talent, work needs to be done to engage with students early in their university life to ensure they consider the industry as an option for them. Their strategy for addressing these ambitions is to run female and minority ethnic targeted Spring Week programmes in Trading and Tech for first-year undergraduate students, to open their eyes to the world of proprietary trading and careers with Maven.

AN EVENTS SERIES GIVING STUDENTS TANGIBLE SKILLS TO TAKE AWAY

Maven partnered with Wiser to find and hire 20 talented individuals for their Spring Week positions in April 2023. However, getting first-year students excited about a field they may know nothing about can be challenging. That's why we created a unique series of in-person events in October 2022 to showcase the industry and encourage students to apply.

We designed the events series to be an interactive experience aimed at teaching new skills to attract students who weren’t already interested in trading, to ensure we were making them accessible to students from all backgrounds.

As a company committed to diversity and inclusion, Maven is actively working to break away from the stereotype of white males dominating the industry, so the diversity metrics we tracked in the campaign were gender and ethnicity, with a particular focus on attracting black heritage students.

Wiser ran nine events in total - two trading workshops, two speed-networking sessions, one diversity panel and four intimate lunch & learns. These all took place in a central London venue for ease of access for both students and ‘Mavenites’ attending. To ensure the events were accessible to students from all backgrounds and universities, Maven reimbursed travel expenses to the venue.

ATTRACTING STUDENTS WHO HAD NEVER HEARD OF MAVEN

During peak student attraction season, we faced competition from other companies in the events circuit. With diverse talent in high demand, these students are oversaturated with marketing. To stand out, we focused on offering hard skills that attendees could walk away with.

Wiser designed the sessions to give students either a skill or a unique experience that would stand them in good stead for their future applications. This value-add was pivotal to Maven’s overall ambition to set diverse candidates up for success in the industry, and differentiated the sessions to others on the market.

To promote the events, we used our cohort of diverse student ambassadors, as well as advertisements on social media with female figures at the forefront of the creative, so users felt there was a home for them at Maven.

We screened all event applications and hand-selected those to be invited to each event, ensuring a high-quality pipeline post-event to feed into Maven’s application process. We looked for students who had the potential to thrive at Maven (without necessarily any experience in the industry) whilst ensuring diversity at every stage.
